Do you want to be a coach couple?
Most coach couples have no special degrees or licenses and can learn the listening and guiding skills needed to be an effective coach couple. Tools and materials are available that enable the couple to learn and grow at their own pace. As a coach you are simply facilitating the learning process and subsequent behavior changes for your couple. Diane Sollee, director of The Coalition for Marriage, Family and Couples Education in Washington, D.C. had this to say about coaching:
For years, the assumption was that therapists were the only ones who could help struggling couples, and even then it was an arduous quest. But researchers, delving into the vagaries of relationships, have found:
- Almost all couples - those who divorce and those who stay together - have about the same number of fights about the same issues: kids, money, sex, time, and other people.
- The key is to help couples understand how to handle disagreements, the theory being that these techniques can now be taught by almost anyone.
- The result is a curriculum like the one used by MarriageTeam, where coaches from churches, schools, and counseling centers are being trained to teach marriage skills and coach couples. "It's like a marriage renaissance."
